A man was arrested on the steps of Blackpool Magistrates’ Court after he refused to stop drinking vodka and hand the bottle over to police officers.

Darren Owen told officers he needed a drink before he faced a court appearance in which magistrates would hear he had punched his wife on the cheek and pushed his stepdaughter during an argument at their home.

Owen, 33, of Daggers Hall Lane, Marton, pleaded guilty to two assaults and an offence of being drunk and disorderly.

He was sentenced to a 12 months community order with up to 30 days rehabilitation to be supervised by the probation service and fined £90 with £250 costs plus £25 victims’ surcharge by District Judge Rod Ross sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.
