AN arson probe has been launched after fire destroyed a semi-detached property.

Three crews today tackled the blaze which spread to a neighbouring house and closed the A583 at Newton.

The disused property on the A583 Blackpool Road at Newton was one of eight homes on the row earmarked for demolition.

Firefighters today described “dramatic” scenes after they were called to the blaze at just before 5am, telling of flames shooting out from the roof which they immediately began to tackle.

Officers called in an aerial ladder platform from Blackpool to help them extinguish the fire as crews from Wesham and Fulwood battled the flames on the ground.

Watch manager Brian Coulburn, from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, told The Gazette they were treating the incident as suspicious as the properties were all boarded up and disused.

He added: “When we arrived the building was well alight and flames were coming out of the roof. It all looked fairly dramatic.

“The entire property was alight and the fire had spread to the second floor and roof of the adjoining premises.
