A BLACKPOOL fan is recovering at home following a sickening attack in a Wembley hotel.
Peter Mason was hit with a glass, then punched and kicked by four West Ham United fans in the Hilton Wembley Plaza Hotel after the Seasiders lost the play-off final.
Mr Mason, 54, who is believed to be from the Lytham area, was in the hotel’s bar with his family on Saturday night when he is said to have accidentally knocked into an opposing fan’s girlfriend.
Four fans from the East London team then attacked him and punched him to the floor, leaving him with a gash to the head.
Ann Williamson, 43, from Goldstone Drive, Cleveleys, was staying in the hotel with her husband and children.
She said: “I saw him being punched then he hit the ground like a boxer who had been knocked out, but they carried on kicking him.
“They were horrible – shouting and being rude – and it wasn’t a nice experience.
“It was a horrible and I don’t want to go through that again because it got completely out of hand.
“I had been spoken to him and his family the night before the game and he was a really nice, quiet family man and I don’t know how this all came about.
“There were only a few Blackpool fans in there and it was like an East End pub.
“I know this was a football game, but when someone is on the floor and completely out of it, I didn’t expect someone to keep kicking him.”
Ann’s husband Paul, 45, added: “It was horrendous and a totally unprovoked attack.
“They smashed a glass over his head and I think if we had beaten them there would have been a murder.
“Inside the ground the West Ham fans were spitting at us – they are the worst set of fans I have come across.
“There is no word to describe them other than ‘scum’ and I never want to come across them again.”
A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: “We were called at 9.58pm on Saturday to reports of a fight at the Hilton Wembley Plaza Hotel, Empire Way.
“Officers attended and a man in his 50s was taken to hospital suffering from head injuries.
“He has since been discharged from hospital and officers from Brent CID are investigating.
“One man has been arrested in connection with the investigation and has been bailed pending further inquiries.”
