A hostel resident grabbed a staff member and pushed her against a door after she asked him to stop bothering other residents.

John Hughes had been knocking on doors pestering other residents for cigarettes at William Lyons House hostel, on Exchange Street, in North Shore when his victim told him to stop.

The 41-year-old, of Ellesmere Road, Marton, pleaded guilty to assault at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court yesterday and was fined £100 with a £20 victims’ surcharge and ordered to pay the victim £50 compensation.

Steven Townley, defending, said his client - who was handed an eviction notice from the hostel for causing problems for residents - had a long-standing alcohol problem and had given into temptation and started drinking again at the hostel because other residents drank in their rooms.

Mr Townley said Hughes had since apologised to his victim.
