A FORMER soldier caused almost £6,000 of damage after smashing his high-powered BMW into a wall.

James Stringer, 31, of Chipping Grove, Grange Park, was over the drink-drive limit when he sped through two give way signs – prompting police to follow him – before crashing into an ornate garden wall on Warbreck Hill Road in the early hours of November 9.

A blood test showed Stringer had 90ml of alcohol in his body at the time of the crash, with 80ml being the legal limit.

He had two previous drink driving convictions.

At Blackpool Magistrates’ Court yesterday Stringer admitted drink-driving and failing to stop after an accident.

Stephen Duffy, defending, said Stringer – who had only had the car for a couple of weeks and was unfamiliar with its rear-wheel drive –had had two and a half pints earlier in the evening and was surprised by the reading.

District Judge Jeff Brailsford put Stringer on 12 months supervision, ordered him to pay £200 compensation and banned him from the road for four years.
