A FORMER building society branch manager turned to shoplifting to meet her alcohol problems.

Julia Hughes, 48, stole three bottles of wine from a shop in St Annes, Blackpool Magistrates Court heard.

Hughes, of Birkdale Avenue, St Annes, appeared at court after being arrested for her failure to attend an earlier hearing of her case.

She pleaded guilty to the thefts of wine from Home Bargains.

Her lawyer Mitch Serangi told the court: “This is a sad case involving a woman who rose to the post of branch manager of a building society.

“However she now has a chronic drink problem and is at rock bottom with her house about to be taken from her.”

Hughes was given one day’s prison when she appeared at Blackpool Magistrates Court yesterday.

But the court heard she will not have to serve the day in prison because of the time she had spent in custody prior to the hearing.
