A drunken moped rider who crashed in front of police following him has escaped being sent to prison.
Dwayne Shea, 24, of Kytson Close, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol while disqualified and driving without insurance.
He was sentenced to 20 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, banned from driving for four years and ordered to pay £85 costs plus £80 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.
The court was told that, on February 18 at 11.15pm, police checked on a moped Shea was riding on George Street in Blackpool and found it had no insurance.
The patrol car followed Shea and, on Victory Road, he failed to negotiate a bend and crashed.
He was taken to hospital, where a blood test showed he was more than twice over the legal drink drive limit with 211 millilitres of alcohol in his body – 80 is the limit.
Shea claimed it was the police car which made him crash.
He told police he was taking the moped for a test drive as it was for his stepson and he had been working on it.
