A severely injured sparrowhawk, a dead duck and pigeon were discovered by police as they arrested a man for drugs offences.

An 18-year-old from Pilling was stopped by PC Colin Adams from Garstang and Over Wyre Police on Monday and arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply and causing criminal damage.

As the officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team searched the car the man was driving, they came across the animals.

The sparrowhawk was trapped in the boot alongside the dead bird and duck.

Specialist wildlife officer Mark Thomas attended.

The hawk was taken to a vets but was deemed to have untreatable injuries and was put down humanely.

The man was also arrested for failing to prevent causing unnecessary suffering.

He was interviewed by police and has been released on police bail while inquiries into the matter continue.

A police spokesman said the man had voluntarily disclaimed a shotgun licence which he had held.
