Safecrackers stole more than £1,200 after smashing through two walls and an outer fence in a late night raid at a Fylde sports club.

An appeal for information has been launched after three men armed with a pickaxe forced their way into South Shore Tennis Club in Blackpool between 11pm and midnight on Sunday.

The raiders broke through a fence behind the clubhouse then knocked through a wall to the clubhouse.

After discovering the room did not have a safe, the raiders smashed through another wall into the cellar, where they emptied the contents of the safe there. The thieves also stole alcohol from the cellar.

Today, club partner David Dunn appealed for information in finding the thieves.

He said: “I am a realist – it goes on in life. But I am so shocked at the damage. It is probably the clumsiest break-in I have seen.

“You usually find when people try to break in somewhere it is windows or doors.

“They have just smashed through the walls. It looks like a pickaxe was used.

“I would ask anyone who was out or saw anything suspicious to contact police.”

Police confirmed officers were called to the incident around midnight after the raiders set off an alarm.

Beer, alcopops and soft drinks were taken.

Anyone with information is urged to call Blackpool Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
