Would-be burglars smashed their way into a town centre bank before escaping in an attempted midnight raid.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after the Halifax branch, on Victoria Road West, Cleveleys, was left damaged.

The raiders used tools to smash their way into the bank before trying to open two cash machines inside the building.

However, they escaped undetected after they were unable to gain access to the main safe in each machine.

The incident is thought to have happened at around midnight on Saturday.

Det Sgt Kathryn Riley, from Fleetwood CID, has urged members of the public to come forward with information.

She said: “The offender or offenders smashed the window and on gaining entry targeted two ATM machines, but no concerted attempt was made to try to get the cash cassettes out.

“They got past the first lock.

“But when they realised how big the secure metal safe was and whatever tools they brought with them weren’t going to facilitate entrance they left shortly after.

“The bank is still working out the costing, but there’s not a huge amount of damage to the ATMs.”

There is no CCTV footage from inside the bank, but inquiries are ongoing with regards to whether any images can be found from other nearby cameras.

Det Sgt Riley added: “Our main appeal would be if anyone was in the area at the relevant time and saw anybody or any suspicious vehicles to contact us.”

Anyone who can help trace the burglars should call Lancashire Police on 101 and ask for Fleetwood CID.
