A hotel fire which police say “could have endangered lives” is being treated as suspicious.

Detectives are investigating the blaze, which broke out at the Silver Beach Hotel, in Albert Road, central Blackpool, yesterday morning.

The fire started by a cellar door, which was destroyed.

Two crews from Blackpool fire station were called to the incident at 3am.

Thirty people inside the hotel were evacuated while firefighters tackled the flames.

Det Sgt Mark Dickinson, from Blackpool CID, said: “We’re treating this as a suspicious fire which could have endangered lives.

“We want to appeal for witnesses who may have been around at that time.

“It’s one of those buildings where you’ve got to get down some external steps to get down to the front of the basement area. We’d be very interested in speaking to anyone who saw someone doing something like that.”

The fire caused severe smoke damage to three ground floor rooms but no-one was injured and guests were allowed back inside shortly afterwards.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
