Police and bomb disposal experts were today continuing to probe an explosives scare at a Blackpool skip hire centre.

Police put a 100-metre cordon around an area at Baguley’s Skip Hire Dickies Lane, Marton, after workers discovered a suspicious package they believed was a homemade bomb inside a carton of chicken at around 3pm on Friday.

Army bomb disposal units carried out a controlled explosion on the package at around 7pm using a robot from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment (EODR).

The incident saw parts of Progress Way and Midgeland Road closed.

An Army spokesman said the incident had been a false alarm, though detectives from Blackpool CID are making inquiries.

A police spokesman said: “We have no response in relation to Friday night’s incident at this stage.”
