MYSTERY today surrounds the death of a man found unconscious in a Blackpool alleyway.

James Whitelaw was found with serious head injuries in an alleyway behind Regent Road at 10pm on Friday.

The 46-year-old was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he died in the early hours of yesterday.

Six days on from the incident, detectives say it is still unclear how Mr Whitelaw came by his injuries.

Det Insp Jon Clegg said: “At this stage it is not clear how this man has come by his injuries and what we are trying to establish is where he was immediately prior to being in the alleyway on Friday night.

“We believe this man, in the days leading up to the incident on Friday evening, had been seen on a number of occasions in the local area in a confused state.”

Mr Whitelaw, who is originally from Glasgow, was wearing a black three-quarter jacket and beige top when he was found.

A post mortem examination will be carried out today to try to establish the cause of death.
