A MAJOR road was closed for three hours when a police car and BMW collided.

Traffic was diverted away from Amounderness Way, Fleetwood, between the Eros and Dock roundabouts shortly after 4.30pm yesterday.

A police officer driving one of the vehicles was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital after the two cars crashed on the A585 during rush hour.

The officer suffered only minor injuries and his passenger - also a policeman - was uninjured in the collision. The driver of the BMW 3 series was also unhurt.

An investigation into the cause of the collision immediately took place and the stretch of road was re-opened at 7.30pm.

Vehicles driving north on Amounderness Way were diverted on to Copse Road and those travelling south were forced to turn around at the Dock roundabout.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “An officer driving the police vehicle was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for a precautionary check-up.

“We have been to see him and he is fine and the other two men involved were not injured.”
