ONE of Blackpool’s greatest-ever players would have marked his birthday today - and one fan has fond memories of his time on the seaside.
Pool fan Keith Taylor used to play football with Sir Stanley Matthews, who would have turned 98 today, and his friends on the beach at St Annes every Sunday in the 1950s.
Mr Taylor, who moved from the resort to Dorset in the 1980s, said: “I used to play football with Stanley Matthews and a group of his friends every Sunday on the beach in St Annes. He was like a celebrity in those days and many celebrities came to watch us all play football on the beach.
“I remember he tried his famous dribble in front of me and by a mishap I kicked the ball straight through his legs, he was so amazed that he picked me up and swung me around.”
Mr Taylor is still a keen Pool fan – joining friends to watch the Tangerines whenever possible – and recently took his own mini Blackpool Tower around Australia to spread the message abroad.
