The magic of Michael Jackson will grace Blackpool Promenade with confirmation West End hit Thriller Live will be the headline act on the Saturday night of the resort’s Switch-On Festival weekend.

Extended highlights from the top show which has sold millions of tickets around the world will be part of a West End showcase also featuring excerpts from Chicago.

Jon Lee of S Club 7 fame will also be part of a performance of songs from The Jersey Boys, while other acts are still to be announced for the Friday and Saturday nights.

The show will take pace on the Tower Festival Headland on Saturday August 30,

Three nights of high octane entertainment will also include the free Illuminations Switch-on concert on Friday August 29 and singer Rebecca Ferguson performing in the finale concert on Sunday August 31 with special guests Atomic Kitten, Liberty X, 911 and Damage.

Coun Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: “The securing of Thriller Live is another fantastic coup for Blackpool.

“It means we now have two sensational shows lined up for the Saturday and Sunday and with even more to come when we start to reveal the all-important line-up for Switch On night on the Friday.”

Thriller Live will feature extended highlights of the best of the music from the King of Pop’s back catalogue, enhanced by stunning costumes and his signature dance moves.

Claire Smith, president of hoteliers group StayBlackpool, said the latest addition to the programme meant there would be something for everyone over the Switch-On weekend.

She said: “It is completely different to what has been announced for the Sunday, so it means there is something for every age group, and style of music. I love the fact events are being held over the three days as this will encourage people to stay over, and the £20 ticket shows Blackpool is delivering value for money.

“I don’t know where else could you get all that for £20.”

Early bird tickets for the weekend are now on sale at £20 per adult, £10 per child, with the first 5,000 purchasers getting guaranteed free wristband to the Friday night Switch-On event which is free but by wristband only.

Wristbands will be allocated at random through an online ballot with a maximum of four wristbands per household.

A minimum of 6,000 of these will be allocated to applicants from the Blackpool area.

Wristband registration closes at noon on Wednesday July 23 and successful applicants will be notified on Tuesday July 29.
