A LYTHAM skin cancer nurse is going down under to get on top of a topical health issue.

Heather Baines, skin cancer clinical nurse specialist, based at Clifton Hospital, has been awarded the Annual Australian Travel Award by the British Dermatology Nurses Group.

The prestigious award means she will travel to Australia in May and present at the two-day Australian Dermatology Conference in Sydney, before travelling to Melbourne to visit the skin cancer centre and Ego Pharmaceutical company, who produce some of the most popular protection creams in Australia.

Heather, who has been a dermatology nurse for more than 30 years, says she was honoured to have been chosen for the trip by her fellow professionals.

She said: “I was shocked and honoured to have been given this award and I am really looking forward to the trip.

“Australia has led the way in promoting the skin cancer awareness message and it will be great to see what they do and the effect it has had. I have been doing this job for a lot of years, but you never stop learning and I hope to pick up some valuable tips.”
