Switch-On your tastebuds!

A Food and Drink Festival is coming to Blackpool

A Food and Drink Festival is coming to Blackpool

Blackpool’s Illuminations Switch-On is always a visual feast - but this year it is set to tickle the taste buds too.

For as part of the lights weekend, the town will host a Switch-On Food and Drink Festival on the Promenade alongside Central Pier.

Visitors to the event over the weekend of August 29, 30 and 31, will be able to sample international street food and dine at pop-up restaurants.

The Chef’s Theatre will host top local chefs cooking their favourite dishes, while a Drinks Theatre will include cocktail shaking and wine-tasting.

Adding to this will be the Cake and Bake, Chocolate and Dessert Theatre Tent where top patisserie chefs and chocolatiers demonstrate their favourite recipes and give cooking tips.

Iain Fenwick of Citylicious Events, which is bringing the free festival to Blackpool, said: “We want to put on a celebration of Britain’s multi-cultural society and give a platform to showcase the diversity of the British food culture.

“Events like these should not be exclusive and we want to make this celebration available to everyone so people can discover what new exciting foods are out there.

“Street Food is cool, mobile isn’t just about technology nowadays. Some of the tastiest foods you can enjoy are served to you in a styrofoam container on the corner.

“What’s more is they are made from locally sourced produce and as Citylicious is a big fan of the ‘farm to table’ initiative we cannot think of anytime better than bringing it all together during one of the country’s most iconic celebrations.”

Coun Graham Cain, cabinet member for tourism and leisure on Blackpool Council, said: “We expect there to be thousands of people on the Promenade during Switch-On weekend and this is an added bonus on top of the three quality shows and the Illuminations themselves.”

Comedian Peter Kay will switch on this year’s Illuminations following a concert by Little Mix.

On Saturday night it’s the turn of the West End musicals to thrill the crowds with performances from Thriller Live, Chicago and Dirty Dancing amongst others. The final concert of the weekend is headlined by Rebecca Ferguson and features Atomic Kitten, 911 and Liberty X.
