Horse riders and residents claim they are taking their lives into their hands when they step out on to a road blighted by speeding drivers.

Neighbours on Midgeland Road, which leads out of Blackpool towards St Annes, have called for motorists to put more thought into their conduct on the road – which they say is problematic at all hours of the day or night.

The issue of speeding motorists is most keenly felt by equine enthusiasts at the Midgeland Road Riding School, who say they have to put up with nuisance drivers scaring their horses.

School member Claire Lowe, 36, said: “The other day we had a woman in a Mini beeping behind us which can scare the horses.

“We’ve had people effing and blinding out the window at us and people fly past us, it’s just too busy.

“It is a pain.”

Fellow rider Susie Thorpe, 58, added: “You take your life in your hands coming on to the road because it’s that fast.”

The street has been used regularly by hundreds of drivers travelling between Blackpool and south Fylde, who cut through nearby North Houses Lane and Division Lane every day in a bid to save time on rush-hour journeys.

But residents on Midgeland Road claim this has led to an increase in speeding, with police patrols and mobile speed cameras regularly seen on the route .

Steve Nicholas, 78, said: “They all come and go like maniacs.

“Sometimes they’ve got police cars here.

“When the road floods people get water all over their front door when cars hit it.

“Cars fly down here and some people were on about putting cameras up but it hasn’t done any good.

“The police car’s forever pulling people up for speeding.

“Sometimes when I’m in bed I’m listening expecting a crash because you can hear them going that fast.”

Linda Wakelin, 49, added: “At night time you get really fast traffic, they just think it’s for the fun of it when they speed past.

“We’re walking the dogs sometimes and it’s scary.

“A speed camera would be quite handy really.”
