A TOWN centre “eyesore” is one step closer to being developed after plans were submitted for luxury living accommodation on the site.
McCarthy and Stone’s proposals to build 50 apartments for pensioners on Station Road in Poulton – a site previously mooted for a new health centre –have now been lodged with Wyre Council.
The mix of 35 one-bedroomed and 15 two-bedroomed apartments will provide assistance to the residents living there while maintaining their independence.
The proposals were given enthusiastic backing when plans went on display in November, with local residents saying the development will tidy up the un-used plot of land.
Coun Peter Gibson, Breck ward councillor for Wyre Council, said: “I’m always pleased to welcome any interest in Poulton and think this is a positive scheme.
“It’s still in its early stages and has to go through the planning committee, but I’m sure residents will be pleased with the plans because the site has been a mess for too long.”
If the plans are approved, they will provide modern living accommodation with an on-site restaurant, laundry room and guest suite.
Carol Woolley, chairman of Poulton’s Historic and Civic Society, said: “I’m delighted with the plans.
“We met McCarthy and Stone during the embryonic stages and it’s great the land will be built on and cleaned up.
“They’ve done their homework and there’s a need for them in a place where there’s a lot of retired people who don’t want to leave the area but need assistance.
“It’s been an eyesore for a long time and it will help to tidy it up.”
Lesley Middleton, chairman of Poulton Area Forum, added: “From the feedback I’ve had in meetings it seems very positive, particularly for those who live on Breck Road.
“There are concerns about noise and disruption but the early feeling is people are very much in favour of it.”
Steve Secker, regional managing director for McCarthy and Stone, said staff had consulted with the local community.
He said: “Their comments have helped us shape the proposals for Extra Care living accommodation.
“We believe our plans, which we’ve now submitted, will meet the needs of older residents who are keen to remain in Poulton.
