A Blackpool woman who sparked two police investigations after she slashed herself with an old-fashioned razor before claiming “rape” has been jailed for nine months.

Judge Desmond Marrinan told June Plunkett that such “shocking, selfish and cruel” false claims not only undermined the justice system but also do “nothing to help those genuine victims who are out there... that consideration is an over-arching one in treating cases of this type”.

Plunkett, 40, whose former address was Angus Street, Antrim, Northern Ireland, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice between September 2006 and February 2011, by falsely reporting to police that she had been raped on September 9, 2006.

The Antrim Crown Court judge said while he accepted Plunkett may have been under considerable stress at the time, and looking for attention, he could not understand why she “decided to convert that story into a full allegation of rape.a cynic may say you were looking for compensation.with tens of thousands of pounds being paid out to genuine victims”.

A prosecution lawyer told the court that Plunkett, who later moved to Blackpool, had claimed she was attacked by a man on waste ground, and that the man had grabbed her by the throat and slashed her across the chest and abdomen before raping her.

Although Plunkett later made a video-taped police interview, and provided a photo-fit, officers noticed there were inconsistencies in her story.
