Runners help young get off on right foot

The money raised by the runners who tackled this year's Blackpool 10k Fun Run in May is handed over to the NSPCC at their new Blackpool service centre.

DEDICATED runners who tackled a gruelling run on the Promenade have seen their generous donations awarded to charity.

Thousands of runners took to Blackpool’s Golden Mile in May for the 30th Beaverbrooks Blackpool 10k Fun Run to help support the NSPCC.

And after months of hard work in training – and eventually completing the six mile race – more than £50,000 was handed over to the children’s charity at their new Blackpool service centre.

Tess O’Callaghan, NSPCC corporate fundraising executive, said: “Entrants to this year’s 10k Fun Run certainly put the fun into fundraising for the NSPCC and we are thrilled to have received such a fantastic amount. I want to thank Beaverbrooks for supporting us.

“Through our work at the NSPCC, we have a chance of making a real difference to a child’s life and every penny raised will go a long way in helping us provide much-needed services for children across Blackpool.”

The £51,188 will go towards the charity’s Turning the Tide for Children appeal, which aims to raise £2.5m to help vulnerable children and families across Blackpool.

Andrew Brown, chairman of Beaverbrooks, said: “We are absolutely thrilled the Fun Run has raised so much money for such a worthy cause.

“Keeping children safe from harm and abuse is a cause close to our hearts and we are proud every single penny will go towards helping children across Blackpool.”

The Plymouth Road building will be the base for the charity’s work on the Fylde coast.

Jack Hecht, co-chairman of the fun run’s organising committee, added: “It was another good year and we’re happy with what we raised.”
