LOVABLE Sam is recovering at home after a gander at a gaggle ofgeese took an unexpected turn for the worse.
The three-year-old black Labrador was exploring woodland behind Morrisons in Anchorsholme when a dip in a pond saw the ferocious fowl turn on him.
Fortunately Sam’s owner Lee Knowles, 40, was close by and waded into the waist-deep pond to rescue his pet.
He said: “I was scared for my dog’s life and if I hadn’t gone in he would’ve drowned.They nearly pecked his eyes out and if an elderly person was walking their dog they wouldn’t have stood a chance.”
Mr Knowles was with his heavily pregnant wife who decided to take matters into her own hands by throwing coffee at the geese.
He added: “It was horrific and he definitely would’ve died because they were sitting on his head.
“They were on top of him and pushing his head under the water and if I hadn’t been there to go in and shout at them it would’ve been a lot worse. Sam loves going in the water but he never gets into trouble and we won’t be going back there again.”
A spokeswoman for the RSPCA warned dog walkers to take care when walking close to wildlife. She said: “Don’t let your dog swim in a pond where water birds are.
“It’s very important to keep dogs on leads around wildlife like geese.
“Even the best behaved dog can become unpredictable when faced with something it is unfamiliar with and the RSPCA receives lots of calls about water birds attacked by dogs, which would naturally have the upper hand.
“The best way to ensure the safety of your dog and the wildlife it comes into contact with is to have it on a short lead, so that you can control the situation.”
