CHILDREN in Fleetwood are racing to school to enjoy their new-look classrooms.
An £18.3m investment in seven of the town’s primary schools has allowed schools to add new classrooms, redevelop playgrounds and bring in the latest technology for children to learn in new, inspiring environments.
At Charles Saer Primary School teachers have been able to oversee a complete rebuild of the premises, with children moving into their new buildings, on Grange Road, yesterday.
Headteacher Carolyn Thackway told The Gazette: “The build has brought Charles Saer smack, bang into the 21st century.”
Funding for the developments has come from the Government’s schools capital funding, the Primary Capital Programme and a portion from schools and dioceses.
Shakespeare Primary School is inviting parents to visit tomorrow afternoon to have a look around its new facilities.
Susan Bartlett, headteacher at the school on Manor Road, added: “The children think it’s wonderful, we’re really lucky.”
As part of the school’s redevelopment work four new classrooms, complete with interactive whiteboards, new offices and an entrance area have been built.
Teachers at St Wulstan’s and St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School, on Poulton Road, said their children have been making the most of their new spaces.
The school has seen four new classrooms, a library and a large independent learning space added as part of a £1.2m investment.
Headteacher Richard Sanderson said: “Seeing every day how the learning centre is being used for something completely different is fantastic.”
At Flakefleet Primary School, headteacher Michael Barnes was yesterday looking over plans with landscape designers to create inspiring outdoor areas for children.
Inside the school four new classrooms, a library, dance and drama studios, and a media suite are to be unveiled later this week as part of the third phase of its development.
Mr Barnes said: “The children are really excited.”
Pupils have played their part in the development, donning builders hats and helping to build a wall.
Lancashire County Council (LCC) has been working with pupils since 2010 to find out what facilities and equipment they wanted to see in their new schools.
Susie Charles, cabinet member for children and schools on LCC, said: “In these difficult financial times I am delighted we have had this opportunity to fund the much-needed renewal of primary schools in Fleetwood.”
