Mamma Mia! ‘Noisy’ punks scupper show

West End show Mamma Mia is coming to Blackpool this summer.

West End show Mamma Mia is coming to Blackpool this summer.

Four nights of Blackpool’s Mamma Mia! run this summer have been cancelled – to allow for the “noisy” punk festival to take over the Winter Gardens instead.

Audiences hoping to see the smash-hit musical have been told the venue has had to call off the shows due to the annual Rebellion Festival, which fills the venue with thousands of punk fans.

One woman today told how she has now lost the front row tickets she had booked a year in advance .

She said: “They said they were really, really sorry but they’ve had to cancel it
because of a ‘noisy event’ in the next door venue.

“They must have known the punk festival would be on.

“How many people will have booked in advance and got hotels, days off work or coaches booked, too? ”

The punk festival, from August 7 to 10, sees more than 200 bands performing on six stages over four days. Last year, it attracted more than 3,000 people to the resort.

Customers have been
offered a full refund and extra performances have been added to the schedule to make up for the cancelled shows.

A spokesman for Crown Entertainment Centres, which operates the Winter Gardens on behalf of the council, said: “The Winter Gardens hosts an annual punk festival, Rebellion, which is a key event in the diary, and the volume of the music unfortunately does bleed into the Opera House.

“We have considered all the options, including sound proofing, but ongoing sound checks have highlighted the performances of Mamma Mia! will be affected.

“We are offering those
patrons that are affected
alternative performances and we have added extra performances in the early part of the week commencing August 4.

“Anyone who has been
unable to attend an alternative performance has been offered a full refund.”
