SISTERS have breathed new life into a shopping village by taking the reins of a fruit and vegetable store.

Shoppers to Bispham village were left disappointed when the previous owners of the Salad Bowl brought the shutters down on their shop.

But ambitious Rachael Docherty, 35, decided to take matters into her own hands and quit her stockbroker job of 13 years to open the shop back up with her sister Debbie.

She said: “We’ve always wanted to work together and there’s a demand for this so I decided to give up my job and take the plunge. The elderly population in the area want to come here and buy one carrot and a potato, they don’t want to buy big bags of vegetables in supermarkets.

“We are all about creating a good atmosphere and engaging with customers and the area is crying out for this.

“When the shop became available it was almost like fate because it’s right next to the butchers. It’s perfect.”

The sisters have lived in Bispham since they were teenagers and elder sister Debbie De La Ware, 39, is no stranger to working in the area.

She runs the butchers situated next door to the re-named Bispham Salad Bowl with her husband and splits her time between the two Red Bank Road businesses.

Debbie said: “When this closed down four weeks ago we expected a bit of a decline in the butchers but with the horse meat scandal we haven’t noticed a difference.

“The shop is definitely needed here and it means we can interact with customers with a personal touch.”

The shop opened for the first time on Friday.

It comes after traders in the village had called on residents to use their local shops more often.

Debbie added: “We’ve had a lot of people saying they are glad the shop has come back and it means the other shops around here will benefit too.”
