The entrance to a hospital isn’t the first place you’d think of for a 12-hour cycle event.

The entrance to a hospital isn’t the first place you’d think of for a 12-hour cycle event.

But it was just the place for Patient Experience officer Fiona Jones, who started cycling at 8.30am at the new entrance to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Along with Louise Rothwell from Fitness@BlackpoolFC, Fiona completed the stunt to raise money for the hospital’s charity, the Blue Skies Hospitals Fund.

Her efforts helped raise cash which will be spent on the Children’s Ward at The Vic.

Throughout the day she was joined by staff and volunteers from around the hospital, who took part in the cycle on a rota system.

Half way through the marathon challenge, Fiona said: “It’s really tough and there’s still more time to go but everyone in the hospital is being really supportive and generous.

“This is a great cause really close to my heart. As its summer time so many parents will be looking at things to occupy their children’s time and that will usually mean going out for the day or spending time outdoors. The children in the hospital can’t do that so we want to find as many things for them to do during their stay here as possible.

“It’s usually quite a worrying time going in to hospital, especially as a child, at Blackpool Vic the team do a fantastic job supporting children, young people and their parents.”

The bikes for Wednesday’s event were provided by Fitness@BlackpoolFC, and Tesco supplied refreshments.

Fiona added: “We have a lot of support from local gym Fitness@blackpoolFC, I want to thank them for all they have done.”

There’s still time to donate after Fiona’s 12-hour challenge. Visit www.justgiving.com/spin12.
