A CHARITY shop targeted by thieves has been helped by fund-raising neighbours.

The RSPCA shop on Talbot Road, Blackpool, was targeted by thugs back in October.

They broke down the back door and smashed up an office before making off with around £600 in cash.

Staff from nearby Yorkshire Building Society were shocked at the theft of money raised for abandoned animals and vowed to do their bit to help the charity.

The workers used their 85th anniversary celebrations last year to start fund-raising for the shop and nominating it for funds from the Society’s Charitable Foundation.

They have funded repairs and replaced the funds.

Now the shop has increased security measures, a new back door and revamped office, thanks in part to the £500 given by the building society, based on Birley Street.

Alison Briggs, manager of Yorkshire Building Society’s Blackpool branch, said: “We know some of our local RSPCA staff and we were horrified when we heard the shop had been burgled.

“We know how hard they work to help animals in our community so we nominated them for support from the Society’s Charitable Foundation.”

The cost of repairing the damage and replacing the stolen funds ran into hundreds of pounds, making the Foundation’s contribution all the more appreciated.

Martyn Tetchener, branch manager of RSPCA’s Longview animal centre, in Division Lane, Marton, said: “It’s been excellent of them to do this.

“Their kindness is very much appreciated.”

The Blackpool RSPCA branch is now focussing efforts on revamping its animal centre to replace cramped and outdated premises in Division Lane.
