Developers behind plans for a £10m hotel on Blackpool Promenade claim they have spoken to the Hilton chain about the project.
The news came as members of Blackpool Council’s planning committee last night agreed with recommendations to approve the outline scheme for a hotel at the corner of the Promenade and Chapel Street.
The hotel would see the rundown buildings opposite Central Pier revamped into a 124-bedroom hotel with a raised rotunda and ground floor bar and eatery facing onto the Promenade.
Hotel chain Hilton, which already has premises on North Promenade, was cited as one of the main major national hotel chains spoken to about the site by architect Alan Jones at the planning meeting last night in Town Hall.
He told the meeting: “We have had plenty of support from major hotel chains but no-one will give us anything in writing. They can’t commit themselves on a non- approved site.”
Coun Mark Smith, a member of the committee, asked Mr Jones: “Who have you spoken to (about investing in the site)?” Mr Jones replied that Hilton was one of those approached.
Coun Smith then asked what kind of “reassurance” he had been given from Hilton.
Mr Jones replied that the hotel giant could not commit itself to a non-approved site.
The architect, who has produced a design on behalf of the London-based developers who own the site, said this was “the kind of accommodation Blackpool needs”.
After an original application was thrown out by planners earlier this year, developers reworked the proposal, moving the hotel reception to the front of the proposed building and reducing the height to five storeys.
Councillors had feared the focus of the frontage of the building would be on the dining and drinks areas rather than on the hotel.
Concerns about parking availability at the site were still cited as issues by members of the committee. The 13 parking spaces on the site are anticipated to be used by staff.
Mr Jones said there was “plenty” of car parking in the surrounding area, adding the development was being treated as a town centre one.
