A NEWSAGENT is to close his shop after more than 40 years – but it is not the end for his newspaper selling business.

John Grunshaw, 58, will be the proud owner of Saltcotes News, Saltcotes Road, Lytham, until Saturday, when the busy store will shut its doors for the final time.

John, who took over the business from father Ray, has been involved in running the store for more than 40 years, but said it would not be the end for his loyal customers.

He said: “It is amazing to think we have been open all that time.

“From what I can gather the shop has been a newsagents since the 1920s.

“I’ve got many happy memories of the place, working with dad – it was very much a family-run business.

“I live on the premises with my sisters Diane and Jill, but it will feel strange not waking up to open the store anymore on Sunday morning.”

John admitted the pressure from supermarkets and other retailers has forced the shop to close, saying not enough people are coming through the door anymore.

He said: “We used to get anything between 300 and 500 visitors a day and it kept the store ticking over nicely. But with the onset of more and more supermarkets, the business just isn’t viable.”

The shop is to shut on Saturday afternoon, but Saltcotes News will remain open as a delivery service.

John added: “I still intend to do bits and bobs as a roundsman.

“We have many loyal customers, delivering to areas in Lytham, Ballam, Moss Side and Warton, not to mention Eastham Hall Caravan Park in Lytham and Bank Lane Caravan Park, Warton.

“I also have many paper boys who help me, so it’ll help keep them busy too.

“It will be strange not having the shop open, but it will keep me busy delivering and give me some more time to enjoy my passion of hill-walking.”
