Gazette Best of Health Awards 2014

There’s just one week left for you to nominate your health heroes for our Best of Health awards.

And there are a couple of nurses who know exactly how it feels to be crowned a health hero, perhaps more than most.

That’s because Liz Finnigan and Shelley Brown, who work as specialist outreach sisters at Brian House children’s hospice, have won our Health Childcare Award two years in a row.

The duo support children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, as well as their families, at the hospice on Low Moor Road, Bispham.

They received several nominations from local parents who were extremely grateful for their care and help during difficult times.

They were described as professional, dedicated and caring.

One said last year: “They go above and beyond the call of duty and what is required, helping parents as much as they can in the most incredible of circumstances.

“From providing a little respite for parents, who desperately need it, to ensuring those children near the end of their life are able to achieve a peaceful end in comfortable surroundings.”

Liz said: “We were delighted to have won this award for the second time. It means a lot the nominations came from the families themselves.

“The service is all about them.”
