A DACHSUND from Blackpool has proved every dog has its day after walking away with a top prize at Crufts.

Miniature wire-haired dachsund Zara, who was being shown by her owner Heather Blackburn-Bennett, claimed the prestigious Best of Breed title.

The pair beat off competition from a number of other owners and their dogs to secure the accolade.

Heather, a 23-year-old Royal Society for the Protection of Birds worker, of Rydal Avenue, said: “I have been coming to Crufts since I was a one year old and competing as a handler since I was 10.

“Last year we placed second so to win Best of Breed with Zara this year was amazing.

“The atmosphere at Crufts is always amazing and I would love coming here even if I didn’t compete, but it is special to be in the competition and especially to win.”

Zara was one of over 25,000 dogs at Birmingham’s NEC for Crufts, organised by the Kennel Club which is celebrating 140 years this year.

This year’s Crufts Champion was Jilly, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, whose owner is from Oxfordshire.
