Come and join us!

That is the message from a community group which is urging people to help swell its ranks.

The Mereside Tenants and Residents Association has adopted a new constitution and is looking forward to the next phase of its development.

But committee members are urging more folk to join them.

Vice-chairman Gary Smith said: “We would love to see as many people as possible from the community at our next meeting.

“Anyone who has proposals to improve Mereside or who has issues they would like to raise is very welcome to come along.

“The association is there to make sure the views of the people who live here are acted upon.

“We want people to come along and take on roles and do things.

“As a group, we want to be able to deal with residents’ issues as we have done in the past.”

Last month, The Gazette reported that some former members of the committee had stepped down from their positions.

Former treasurer Bruce Allen, former secretary Ann Allen, and former chairman John Raine had decided to leave the association following a disagreement over the new constitution.

We have been asked to clarify that they did not resign at the annual meeting.

Mr Allen did not stand, Mrs Allen and Mr Raines were re-elected but stepped down after the meeting.

Mr Smith added: “You need procedures and a constitution to run an organisation because you need order. It is not there to bog people down in red tape.

“We had to go through that process and we have done that, and now we are moving forward and concentrating on working for the residents which is what we want.”

The next meeting of the association is on Wednesday July 30 at 7pm at Tarnside Community Centre on Langdale Road.
