IT could have been dangerous, but thankfully for Mitch Midgley-Davies, his fund-raising challenge went swimmingly.
The 44-year-old, from South Shore, managed to swim a two-mile double crossing between the Scottish Isle of Jura and the gulf of Correyvreckan in North West Scotland – the third largest whirlpool in the world.
The area is classified as “violent and dangerous” to shipping vessels and on the day itself, flood tides drove waves to four metres high.
But the brave salsa teacher – who also works at BAE Systems – was undeterred, completing the swim without assistance and raising £500 for Trinity Hospice.
Mitch, who has been swimming regularly since the age of four, said: “It was something I wanted to do as a personal challenge.
“It can be quite dangerous. Only about 100 people have done the crossing one way and there are only about 10 of us who have done the double crossing.
“It was awesome. The first leg was a great swim out and the return was incredible - the sea swell was up to 4 metres which made for interesting conditions and could have made things a bit problematic.
“I really wanted to raise money for Trinity Hospice as it’s such a good local cause.
“My wife works there as a volunteer therapist and we know a lot of people who have been helped in some way by the hospice.
“It’s something really close to my heart. “It does such great work, but relies on about 90 per cent donations.”
Mitch has already smashed his fund-raising target, but hopes to raise as much as possible for the Bispham-based charity.
He added: “People have been so generous, I have passed my target and there is still some cash to be collected in, I think I have raised about £500, which is brilliant. I’m really pleased with how it’s gone.”
