A YOUTH worker who has spent three decades helping youngsters has scooped a top award for her dedication to the community.

Linda Markey has been named a regional winner in the vInspired National Awards – and could now be named the best in the country.

The 64-year-old won the Outstanding Contribution to Youth Volunteering category for the north west region, in recognition of her work across the Fylde inspiring young people to follow in her volunteering footsteps.

As well as completing a youth work degree at the age of 50, Mrs Markey recently set up Coast Be Inspired to provide access to voluntary opportunities for young people and said: “It’s such an honour to be presented with this award.

“You don’t do youth work to get awards – knowing you’re helping people is enough motivation.

“But it’s great to know that people appreciate what I do, and I hope that this might inspire other people to get involved.”

The national winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Camden Roundhouse in March.
