Brazilians could be given a little taste of Blackpool this summer – if a popular resort bar is picked to be re-created in Rio during this year’s football World Cup.
For while the famous sands of Copacabana and Ipanema are more used to being packed with sun-drenched beach bars, a national contest could mean something a little more unusual heading to the Brazilian capital.
The Tower Lounge, on Bank Hey Street, which is regularly packed when England play in international tournaments, currently sits at number 15 on a competition leaderboard - only 10 places away from reaching the top five and having the chance of its vast interior re-created close to Rio de Janeiro’s famous beaches.
Crisps giant McCoy’s is running the competition, which will see the winning pub selected by a celebrity judging panel, including Al Murray, The Pub Landlord, from the five pubs that receive the most votes.
The bid was today backed by Craig Southall, chairman of Blackpool’s PubWatch scheme.
He said: “It would be fantastic and on behalf of all the bars in Blackpool we would wish them every success in it.
“It would be great to see a part of Blackpool, which is a fantastic tourism destination, re-created over there. Blackpool has a great atmosphere and for a bar to be re-created over there would be fantastic.
“It would be great exposure for us all in somewhere which is far away.”
Comedian Murray, who goes on stage as his character The Pub Landlord, said: “Of course, this year it’s all eyes on Brazil – land of beaches, sunshine, samba and the rest. An exotic earthly paradise you might think.
“But there’s one thing missing – the British pub and now McCoy’s are allowing footy fans the chance to fly their local and their mates out to Rio for the greatest tournament on earth.”
Regular revellers at the winning bar will also get the chance to fly out to South America and watch England take on Costa Rica, Uruguay and Italy from their favourite bar stool at their re-created local. England’s World Cup campaign kicks off against Italy on June 14.
Landlords and punters all over the UK are able to nominate or vote for their favourite local online at mccoys.co.uk/riolocal.
