Plans have been revealed for the new venture inside the Madame Tussauds building on Central Promenade.

Blackpool Council, which owns the building, is set to plough £645,000 into the scheme which would be operated by Merlin Entertainments.

The investment would be repaid from ticket sales.

Coun Gillian Campbell, deputy leader of Blackpool Council, said: “The Merlin attractions in Blackpool continue to be popular and well run, and this investment will allow them to enhance the offer at Madame Tussauds and continue to grow the attraction ahead of next summer.

“As the building owner, we will fund the expansion works and claim the money back from increased ticket receipts.

“This investment will help improve Blackpool’s tourism offer, which in turn supports thousands of jobs across the town.”

Kate Shane, head of the Merlin cluster of attractions in Blackpool, said: “We’re very excited about it, and if we get the go ahead, hope to have the new attraction open for the 2018 season.”

Details of what would be inside the new attraction are under wraps but a council report says the opportunity has arisen “for a comic superhero themed attraction to front the Promenade and link directly with the existing Madame Tussauds experience”.

Other Madame Tussauds including in London, Las Vegas and New York already boast Marvel superhero wax figures such as The Incredible Hulk and Spider Man.

The new attraction would use vacant space which already exists inside Madame Tussauds.

The council’s executive is being recommended to approve the proposal when it meets on Monday.
