In a strange twist of fate, their survival in League One is wrapped up with what happens to near neighbours Blackpool, who are favourites to be relegated but who hope to be saved at Fleetwood’s expense.

Fleetwood are at home to bottom club Crewe, who are already doomed, with the worst case scenario being that if the Highbury side lose and Blackpool win at Peterborough, Fleetwood will go down.

But even if the Cod Army side only draw against the Cheshire strugglers, they are safe unless Blackpool not only win, buy do so by a massive 15 goals!

It all means that Fleetwood are likely to be safe if they simply avoid defeat. All the matches in League One kick off at 12.30pm on Sunday.

Lifelong fan Rob Cobb, who lives in Preston, will be at Highbury for this final but vital match.

Rob has been supporting the club since he saw them play Rochdale in the FA Cup way back in 1965, decades before Andy Pilley’s amazing revolution made them a Football League club in 2013.

Retired clerical worker Rob, 64, said: “I’m fairly confident, but you never know. I’ve been worried for weeks and I was even more worried after we lost at Walsall on Monday. We were terrible! In a strange way it will be sweet if we send Blackpool down. It will mean we are the premier football club on the Fylde coast.”
