FYLDE war veterans are celebrating after the British government finally agreed their bravery deserves a medal.
Veterans of the Arctic Convoys, which carried vital supplies to Russian troops battling Hitler’s forces, are to receive an Arctic Convoy Star medal.
William Wood, 87, from Cleveleys, who served on the Merchant Navy vessel Fort Yukon during the Second World War, said he and other members of the North West Russian Convoy Club were delighted by the announcement.
He said: “We were given a badge a few years ago, but badges are for boy scouts. We went through a terrible time. Without the Russians we would have lost the war and at that time we were in desperate straits.”
