A WOMAN threatened by a gang of machete wielding raiders is said to be recovering well following a terrifying robbery at a jewellers.

The shop assistant was faced with three masked men after they burst into diamond specialists Peter Woodcock and Co jewellers in Lytham in broad daylight.

Staff at the shop were yesterday clearing the mess made in the raid ready to re-open today.

Wendy Young, manager of the Clifton Square business, said: “It was a shock, it was so awful.

“The member of staff is coping well.

“We have got to do a replacement to inside one of the windows and then it’s a case of sorting out what they have taken. We have got the loss assessors in.

The thieves, who fled with a six-figure sum in gems, smashed into the store around 10.40am on Tuesday.

Officers were sent to the scene and a police helicopter was scrambled.

Police are appealing for witnesses and are urging anyone with information about the getaway car – a gold Honda Civic – to get in touch.

Det Insp Andy Unsworth, of Blackpool CID, said: “We have done house to house inquiries and collected a lot of CCTV. We have taken several witness statements.

“We are concentrating our inquiries on the vehicle. We have got the full registration of the vehicle and we are trying to find out if that is the right registration for that car or if it has been cloned.

“There are a lot of inquiries going on.

“The lady in the shop wasn’t injured but she is incredibly shocked. She was traumatised.”
