'˜Butterflies' to identify dementia patients

Patients at Blackpool Victoria Hospital who are suffering from dementia will be identified using magnetic butterflies stuck to boards by their beds.

Staff have now been told to keep an eye out for the symbol so they can support and treat the patients appropriately.

The hospital’s dementia champion, Francesca Hall, said: “Inappropriate dementia care can result in extended lengths of stays for the patient.

“Compassionate care helps reduce anxiety, reassures the patient and engenders a calm and welcoming atmosphere.

“It’s vital that people know that a patient has dementia so they can treat and support that person appropriately to ensure the best care possible.”

The butterflies will also be replicated on handover boards, and on patient notes and care plans, the hospital said.
