Three people had to be rescued by firefighters when the flat below theirs caught fire.

A crew from Fleetwood Fire Station attended the flat on Southfleet Place at around 3.30am on Saturday where a fire is believed to have started in a bedroom cupboard.

The flat is thought to have been empty for some time.

Crew manager Kevin Warwick said: “The property is not being lived in and neighbours have not seen anyone going in or out from some time.

“It was quite heavily smoke logged which had spread through the rest of the building. We had to evacuate three people from the flat above due to the smoke.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Earlier on Friday night Fleetwood firefighters were called to a road traffic accident on Amounderness Way after the driver of a car swerved to avoid a fox and collided with a lamppost.

The road was closed for some time at its junction with Rossall Lane after the incident at 11.30pm while petrol was cleaned off the surface.

The male driver was uninjured.
