Downpours in Blackpool have seen almost 90mm of rain drench the resort in May so far this year, way more than the normal amount for the whole month.

But weather experts say the bank holiday weekend coming up will see an end to the chilly, damp conditions as an area of high pressure begins to build from the south.

A Met Office spokesman said: “If the conditions continued as they have been Blackpool would have seen 55 per cent more rain in May than normal.

“But it looks like a brightening picture for this coming weekend.

“The amount of rain that has fallen might surprise people a little because it has not felt to have been particularly wet, but of course May is generally a dryish month and the rain we have had has been mostly through the nights.

“A lot of the weather fronts seem to have passed over during the night so by the time people have got to work it has dried up a bit.

“The next few days will see some heavy showers and periods of sun but the temperatures will still be cool.

“But by Friday we should see some change. An area of high pressure is building from the south and at the moment it looks like it will be stable so we are pretty confident it will stick around for the whole of the bank holiday.

“There is a weak front passing through on Sunday in the north and west but that may only bring a few showers.

“It looks like Saturday and Monday will be the best days.

“The temperature will start improving too, it has been between 10 and 12C and by Friday it should be up to around 13-14C.

“If the high pressure builds it will warm up further as the weekend goes on.”

Hotelier Claire Smith from Stay Blackpool said she was looking forward to better weather this weekend as May had been cold after the previous month’s warm weather.

She said: “I am not sure about the rain but it certainly has been chilly. The year has got off to quite a good start visitor-wise but things have slowed down in May, I think due ot the colder weather.

“It would be great to have sunnier weather for this weekend’s bank Holiday. We have got the start of the big dance festival too this weekend so a lovely sunny Blackpool will encourage all those visitors who are here all next week to come back again.”
