Proposals to open a Subway sandwich outlet alongside a petrol station have been refused amid fears of highway safety.

Blackpool Council planners turned down the application to build a single storey retail unit with parking for six cars alongside the Windmill Service Station on Preston New Road, Marton.

Officers said the development “would be significantly detrimental to highway safety by virtue of the close proximity of the proposed building to the site access.”

It was feared drivers might attempt to back out into Preston New Road which would be dangerous due to the “road layout, vehicle speeds and the volumes of traffic”.

There were also concerns about the closeness of the development site to the motorway junction.
