Fylde coast entrepreneur Simon Rigby has sold one of his businesses – Clifton Buying Group.

The former chief executive officer has handed over total control to managing director Stephen Lawton who created the group in 2011.

It works with more than 2,000 businesses with a combined client spend of over £30m through a network of 200 national and local suppliers allowing customers to make savings on a range of products from fresh meat and game to fruit and veg, cleaning and hygiene products and medical supplies.

Stephen Lawton said: “Clifton Buying Group has been 25 years in the making forging associations with more than 200 suppliers to give clients the best possible advantage in the market place while delivering an ethical and locally driven service.

“I am happy to have taken control and will strive to continue the progression we have made over the last two years.

“In a continuing age of austerity, we have designed a function which allows a company to streamline its buying process and give them a power to purchase at a more affordable price, this combined offering gives companies a distinct advantage over competitors with our specialist team working on their behalf.”

The sale by Simon Rigby for an undisclosed sum follows a period of investment including the takeover of catering at Preston North End, an increased investment in The Kirk Group and substantial investment in both Safehands Care and The Villa.

Mr Rigby said: “Stephen has worked tirelessly over numerous years to turn Clifton Buying Group into what it is today, businesses across the UK rely on it and trust it as a unique tool to gain a competitive advantage.”
