New deal keeps roads in shape
BLACKPOOL Council's state-of-the-art road traffic management system has had a little help from a resort-based firm.
Gaist, which has one of its three offices in the town, has won a 500,000 contract to develop the project which allows users to see where the latest roadworks are using up-to-the-minute technology.
Due to be completed at the end of 2011, the project is focused around the development of the Geographical Resource Platform (GRP).
It can work out the exact area of roads and footways the council is responsible for and allow them to monitor the condition and value their thousands of assets such as road signs and footways.
Gaist has worked with the council for many years and this contract has also given them a nomination for best young start-up business in the prestigious HSBC Start-Up Stars Awards.
Steve Birdsall, managing director of Gaist, said: "We are delighted to be working with Blackpool Council on this GRP project and be building on our already strong partnership with them.
"The GRP system will be ground-breaking in the features it offers and the benefits it provides to the client.
"Our system will allow many disparate stakeholders in the local authority to view and compare a multitude of different assets on our mapping platform."
Will Britain, Principal Engineer at Blackpool Council said: "Following Gaist's successful bid in the competitive tender and the 'proof of concept' development undertaken, we have been impressed by their depth of knowledge in the field of asset management and the innovative systems they have to offer.
"This GRP project will provide a new benchmark of what can be achieved to streamline the whole process, and we have already had interest from other local authorities to see how the GRP project progresses and to participate."
Gaist is developing technology to enable all the emergency services to use one common system.
