A HIGH-SPEED rail link to London has been backed by Fleetwood MP Eric Ollerenshaw.
Many grassroots Conservatives are against the project which would slice through the Chilterns between Birmingham and the capital.
But Mr Ollerenshaw and seven other northern MPs are looking forward to an extension of the line to the north.
In a letter to the Daily Telegraph they said the government should not be blown off course by “a minority in the home counties.”
They said: “High-speed rail will reduce the north-south divide and help the government rebalance the economy.
“With reduced journey times between Leeds and London, the local economy could benefit to the tune of billions.
“The new network will create space on the east coast and west coast main lines.
