BLACKPOOL’S £220m new Central Business District is beginning to take shape at the Talbot Gateway.

People are starting to notice towering stacks emerging from former wasteland and this week the massive Y Columns – which will be used to form the eye-catching base of the new council offices – arrived on site.

And as workmen began setting them in place, Coun Gary Coleman, cabinet member for regeneration and urban development, said: “This is another key milestone in the construction of the building.

“The installation of these eye-catching structural features along the elevations of Talbot Road and Cookson Street is a major step forward.

“It’s fantastic to see the structure starting to take shape and rise above the fencing which borders the construction site.

“Good progress is being made.

“The next big visual step forward will be the steel going up, followed by the flooring and the cladding.

“It’s an interesting process and I will, of course, be continuing to keep a close eye on developments as they move forward.”
