Finding a trader you can trust is not always easy, many a householder has come unstuck by relying on ‘instinct’, a cheeky smile or tradesmen’s patter to choose a plumber or electrician.

And it can often be a costly mistake to make.

Which is why trading standards chiefs in Blackpool now have a directory of ‘Safe and Secure’ traders and hands out awards to recognise those who consistently deliver a good service.

This year plumber Jay Law was named Trader of the Year based on feedback from residents.

Jay, who set up Norbreck-based Jay Law Ltd Plumbing & Heating Services in 2001, said: “I was absolutely delighted when we were announced as winners as we really strive to give a good service.

“I go and see every customer personally before I send out a member of my staff so I get to know every customer, and we always go back to make sure they are satisfied with the job.

“The Safe and Secure directory is about stopping rogue traders taking vulnerable people’s money.

“If someone uses a trader from the list they know they are not going to be ripped off by some sort of cowboy.”

Other winners who picked up accolades at a ceremony held at the Winter Gardens included Stephen Wainwright from Newton Drive-based Wainwright Electrical who scooped the Leader in Customer Care award for showing exceptional customer service and going the extra mile to ensure customers feel happy and safe in their own home.

Andrew Slater from Tranmere Road-based Andrew James Electrical Services won the Newcomer of the Year award which goes to the trader with the most positive comments who has been a member of the scheme for 12 months or less.

And Dave Docherty and Paul Channon from South Shore-based Smart Environmental Services won the partnership award because of their positive feedback from clients from all the agencies involved in the scheme.

Coun Gillian Campbell, Blackpool Council cabinet member for public protection, said: “The awards are recognition for excellent service to the public by the businesses involved. More importantly though, I want to stress the value of the 2013 Safe and Secure list and the impact it is having on protecting consumers.

“I know many people who have used the list and felt reassured by doing so because of the strict vetting that takes place and the code of conduct that businesses on the list are bound by.”
