Tower set to shine - from 6pm today

Central Pier and Blackpool Tower during Blackpool Illuminations

BLACKPOOL’S best loved landmark is set to shine once more – in time for Valentine’s Day.

Just after dusk today, The Tower’s lights will be switched back on in full for only the second time in recent history.

While people have become used to the top of the structure being lit up, at 6pm today the legs will also be switched on.

The Tower will also be lit up tomorrow and Thursday to shine bright red while the heart on the front will cast a pink glow over the Promenade including the wedding chapel in Festival House.

Coun Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for tourism and culture, said: “The council’s Illuminations team has been working extremely hard to make sure all the lights on The Tower could be up and running as soon as possible.

“The result of this is a fantastic display of light that will shine for many miles across the North West. Blackpool’s love on Valentine’s Day can be seen by thousands.

“Since the top of the Tower was first lit up, we’ve received great feedback saying just how spectacular it looks.

“Now we are also able to turn the legs on for special occasions as well.”

The Tower’s lights were last switched back on in full in 2008.

Tower general manager Kate Shane said: “From its very beginnings back in 1894, the Tower has been a beacon on the skyline and we are very proud to work with the council to be able to switch the lights back on and return this iconic landmark to its full glory.”

Previously The Tower was lit by 10,000 pygmy light bulbs which used 150,000 watts of energy but as part of the landmark’s refurbishment, LED lights have been fitted which use two per cent of the energy the traditional bulbs used.

Each of the 5,508 new lights has 42 individual LEDs inside of them capable of producing 16.7 million colour combinations enabling different patterns to be formed as part of eye-catching displays.
